The wines of the Gaillac region of
France
|
| The character and flavor of the
wines are heavily influenced by the terrain of the region. Here the soil
is rocky with both clay and limestone. The red wines are blends of
Duras, Syrah and Braucol grapes. The white wines, both dry and sweet, are
exceptional. Some of the reds you will find here are not aged in oak, and
therefore are lower in tannins with a smoother, fruitier taste. |
 |
|
The whites are derived from Mauzac
and Sauvignon blanc grapes with the special addition of a grape grown
nowhere else in the world but Gaillac known as the Loin de L'oeil. The
Loin de L'oeil gives a wonderful softness to the sweet, or dessert
wines.
As you drive through the country side, you will
see winery signs with a wine glass or the word "gustation" on
it. These wineries invite you to come in and sample, and hopefully buy,
their products. The vintners are very proud of their wines and enjoy the
opportunity to acquaint you with them.
