WHY VACATION IN THE TARN REGION IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE?

It's where you'll find the excellent Gaillacois vineyards that have been in constant production for over a thousand years. In this mosaic of very different terrains, the Gaillac vineyards produce a great variety of elaborate wines, a wide range of dry, sweet and "perlé" white wines, red and rose wines as well as sparkling wines.
It's where you will find great food.  People here drink lots of wine, absorb cholesterol (foie gras, fritons, patés and all that good stuff that healthy people just shouldn't eat and . . . live 6.7 years longer, on average, than everyone else in Western countries.  It's called the French Paradox.

It's where you'll find medieval villages perched on mountaintops, the kind that make you wonder - how'd they do that?

Shown here are the remains of the chateau in Penne.

It's where you'll find the largest brick building in the world, built in the 12th century, the Cathedrale Sainte-Cécile is located in nearby Albi. Aside from being big, it's one of the most beautiful examples of midi-gothic architecture in France.  The frescos on the cathedral's arched ceiling form the largest work of Italian Renaissance painting to be found anywhere in France.

It's where you'll find the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum.  Henri Toulouse-Lautrec slept here. He was also born here, painted here, and left the largest single collection of his works in Albi's Toulouse-Lautrec Museum.

It's where you'll find great recreation:

Golf; hiking; water sports; tennis; horseback riding and fishing as well as lots of shopping.

The Tour de France route wraps around the country, so some of the stages may be within easy driving distance of Gil. Pick a town or a spot along the route and be part of one of the world's most famous sporting event. We were there in 2001 and snapped this photo of the lead group with Lance Armstrong (yellow jersey) in it.

It's where you'll find the climate temperate. There can be some rain in the Spring. Summers are generally warm and dry. Autumn offers beautiful sunny, blue skies and agreeably warm temperatures.

This is the Midi Canal, a man made canal that connects with the rivers to provide a waterway from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean.

DON'T SPEAK FRENCH?

It is generally not a problem. Even if you struggle with rudimentary phrases, you should have little difficulty communicating with shopkeepers and merchants who appreciate the attempt to converse in French but are quite prepared for American tourists. However, should you wish to work on your
French while visiting Gil, we can assist you in finding a suitable tutor.
